One memory I have from my childhood was the first time I tried a nanaimo bar. I couldn't have been older than 5 years old. It was in the corner of the Cooke kitchen and Bernice sat down with me. I don't think of it as a coincidence that I associate sweets with the memory of her, she was a kind and gentle lady who acted as my neighborhood grandmother. I will miss her and will always remember her fondly.
