Dad's Panel Van

Dad in the mid fifties had a green panel Ford or Chev van/car which he used to transport stuff around.  This one time he was gathering fold up chairs for a church event and stuffing them into the back of the van.  I was about 4 years old at the time and I wanted to go with Dad.  The only space available was a small space on top of the pile of chairs in the back and that was the place I wanted to be.  After some careful thought (I am guessing) Dad let me lay down on top.

Once loaded Dad pulled out of the driveway and made a left hand turn out onto the street.  As he swung around into the right hand lane the doors of the van gave way and opened up as I flew out onto the street.  Luckly the traffic was very light and there was no cars near.  I ended up sitting up on top of the strewn pile of chairs in the middle of the road wondering what had happened.  No injuries to me as I don't remember anything else from that point on. I guess I was too stunned or too frightened to recollect. I know that Mom was shocked but I don't know what Dad was thinking or how he reacted to it. But things turned out OK and a good laugh later on.

Love you Dad, David.
