Obituary for Garnet Lansdell Nix

Garnet Lansdell Nix
Garnet Lansdell (Garnie) Nix
Oct 18, 1920 -- Dec 2, 2016
Peacefully at Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville after a brief illness, in his 97th year. Loving husband of 73 years to Mary (Molly) residing at Chartwell Montgomery Village, Orangeville. Garnet leaves his daughter Nancy Burnside (Bob), son Fred (Franca De Angelis) and son Peter (Margaret Woodfall). Grandchildren John Burnside (Kirsti Domay), Jennifer Miedema (Joe), Sarah Mailhot (Marc), Matthew Burnside (Keri), Graeme Nix (Michelle), Yuri Woodfall (Joanna), Roan Nix and Tola Sar (Chris Pickrell). Great-grandchildren Grace, Jack, Eva Burnside; William, Mary, Emily, Thomas Miedema; Samuel, Vivienne, Nathan, Ruthie Mailhot; Andrew,Jessica, David Allison Burnside; Sheridan, Maria, and Jacqueline Nix; and Sister-in-law Lenora Nix. Predeceased by his father Wilbert Nix, mother Violet Nix (Lansdell), brothers Wreford (Irma) and Glenn Nix.
Garnet (Garnie) had his early years at the family farm in Toronto Gore Twp, now Brampton. A graduate of OAC 1942 in Chemistry, Garnet served as service and infantry lieutenant in WWII, and worked for Canada Packers from mail clerk at age 16 to Group Vice President and Assistant President at CP. He was a vice president of Ontario Marketing Boards. He had an impressive path within the food industry with management roles at York Farms and the CP aquaculture division in B.C. and Ontario. Garnet was an outstanding example of the integrity, faithful service and reliability of his generation.
Garnet was a founding family member of Forest Grove United Church, Willowdale where he served as treasurer for many years. His home location moved numerous times with work but his heart remained at Molly’s family cottage on Bella Lake in Muskoka. An avid bridge and card player his photographic memory made him a formidable opponent. Surprised that he was not going to outlive his father who died at 98, Garnet demonstrated his insight and curiosity to his last day. God does not need a quartermaster, but if he did, He now has a really good one.
Our heartfelt thanks to the staff members at Headwaters Health Care Centre for their warm, caring and professional manner which made Garnie’s last days as pleasant as possible. Also to the staff at Chartwell Montgomery Village who have been understanding, gracious and friendly during Garnie’s stay there.
A Memorial Service will be held at Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First Street, Orangeville on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation 2 hours prior to service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Headwaters Health Care Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
