Obituary for William Arthur Meyer

In Loving Memory of WIlliam Arthur Meyer
June 9, 1936 to November 20, 2021
Bill Meyer passed away peacefully at the Dorothy Ley Hospice in Etobicoke on November 20, 2021. Bill was born on June 9, 1936 in Welland, Ontario. Predeceased by the love of his life, Lorraine (d. 2018), his parents, William and Rose Meyer, and his siblings Shirley and Jack. Bill and Lorraine met in Grade 11 and married in 1960. He attended Waterloo Lutheran University. Bill and Lorraine moved to Orangeville, Ontario to start their careers as teachers and to raise a family. Bill was a proud and loving father to Laurie (d. 1967), Cheryl (James), Darren (Trish) and Joanne (Dom) and Grampa to Megan and Katelyn and Papa to Tabitha and Spencer.
Bill taught most of his career at Orangeville District Secondary School. He coached the basketball team and was proud when his former students called him Coach even after retirement. He was a passionate educator and told cherished tales from the classroom and the gym to his grandchildren into his 80s.
Sports were always part of Bill’s life. Playing football and basketball in his youth gave way to curling and especially golf later in life. He would happily spend hours watching his favourite sports on TV.
Bill was happiest when he was socializing with his family or his many friends. He was always ready to tell a joke or laugh when he heard one. He was easy going and always willing to lend a hand if he could.
Bill and Lorraine enjoyed a long, happy retirement. They travelled to all the places they wanted to see and had great times with their friends. They remained dedicated and loving parents and grandparents throughout their lives. They lived and laughed together for 58 years. Bill was a kind, outgoing and funny man who will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Bill’s family would like the thank the team at St. Joseph’s Health Centre for providing excellent, compassionate care and to the Dorothy Ley Hospice.
There will be no drop-in memorial event due to the pandemic.
