Norman, Sylvia (nee Bowman)
Passed away peacefully at Headwaters Health Care Centre on Monday, July 1, 2019 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late John. Dear mother of John and his wife Joan and Russell and his wife Lynne. Cherished grandmother of Tracy (Jeff), Emily (Justin), Matthew (Ilona), and Ben (Kristina); Great-grandmother of Hanna and Olivia. Sylvia will also be greatly missed by other relatives and many friends.
Born in London, England, on June 24,1928, Sylvia grew up there as a teenager during the second World War, at the end of which she met and then married John as an English soldier returning from war-torn Europe. Once settled in the London area, she provided a wonderful home environment full of love, comfort and encouragement to her husband to pursue creating beautiful gardens and to her two sons for them to follow their own interests. For John it was science and for Russell it was engineering, setting them on paths to career successes in those professions.
Later in life, with Russell then living in Canada and John in the U.S.A., Sylvia and her husband emigrated to Orangeville to live nearer to her ‘boys’. It was during this time that her amazing talent in sewing led her to start her own thriving needlework business making costumes and curtains to order, in addition to upholstery projects and tailoring alterations. In these ways, she became well known in the local community and made many enduring friendships with her customers.
Sylvia was a kindhearted and gentle soul who loved life and loved her family. She had a good sense of humor, an appreciation of style in clothing and was often found looking for any excuse to wear a fashionable hat. She was, as simply put by many an admirer, a Lovely English Lady.
A Celebration of Sylvia's Life will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Sunday, July 21, 2019 from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations to Parkinson Canada would be appreciated by the family.
A tree will be planted in memory of Sylvia in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. The annual dedication service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.dodsandmcnair.com
