Obituary for Shirley Yvonne Emerson (Sagadore)

Emerson, Shirley Yvonne (Sagadore), Dec 5, 1929 – Dec 25, 2023
Peacefully at Bethell House Hospice in Inglewood on Monday December 25, 2023 at the age of 94. Beloved wife of the late Richard B. Emerson (1991). Much loved mother of Leslie Walsh (Terry) and the late David (2001) and his wife Lila. Treasured grandmother of Joel Walsh (June). Cherished great grandmother of Thomas, Austen and Jack.
Shirley was born in North Bay Ont., in 1929, the second youngest of ten children of Michael Thomas Sagadore (1967) and Bertha Larivee Sagadore (1942). In 1930 her dad moved the family to Mimico Ont. for better opportunities in education and work. In 1948 she moved to Belleville Ont. to live with her brother and sister in law Jerry and Muriel and completed her last year of high school. After high school she went to work for the Bell Telephone Company as an operator. She moved back to Toronto in 1951 and met and married Richard in 1953. Shirley worked for several companies over the years and finally retired in 1990 from Sears of Canada Catalogue Store, Orangeville where she sold large appliances. When she lost Richard in 1991 she needed to have purpose so she began volunteering within her church and with the EWAG (now EWCS) Adult Day Program in Erin. In Oct 2003 Shirley was a recipient of an award for volunteerism from the Ont. government. In 2016/2017 she received The Shamrock Award from the Town of Erin for her many years of volunteering and community service. She will be sadly missed by her dearest friends Anne, Louise and Louisa, her many nieces and nephews and her wonderful friends in the Erin community, especially her co-conspirators at the EWCS Adult Day Program where she became a client in 2021.

Visitation will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, 21 First St. Orangeville on Tuesday January 2nd from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral mass will be held at St John Brebeuf Church, 24 Millwood Rd. Erin on Wednesday January 3rd at 11:00 am with reception to follow up stairs at the Erin Legion, 12 Dundas St E. Erin Ont.

In lieu of flowers donations to the East Wellington Community Service Adult Day Program or Bethell Hospice would be appreciated by the family.

A tree will be planted in memory of Shirley in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
