Obituary for Robert MacIntyre

Robert B MacIntyre, 1932 to 2020
Robert passed away peacefully Sunday, February 9, 2020 with is wife, Mary DeVries, beside him. Robert is survived by children, Joseph McIntyre, Laura Richardson, Lisa DeVries and David McIntyre and grandchildren, Hannah and Allison McIntyre, and Tyler and Mason White.
In his words, in the last hours before he passed, "I am a husband, and partner of this beautiful woman sitting here, Mary, a woman who put up with me all these years. I am a father of 3 children, who turned out to be solid, good people. I worked as a clinical psychologist; research psychologist; ward psychologist; professor at University of Southern California and University of Toronto OISE.
As a professor of psychology I mentored over 100 graduate dissertations, most of those done by women. I was a promoter of women’s equality and supporter of women’s rights. I worked for civil rights, equal opportunity and housing for everyone regardless of race, creed, colour or gender. I was against the Vietnam war.
I loved very long trips, one being an 85 day journey that took across parts of Canada, and the United States and ended in at my oldest son's wedding in Connecticut." Robert grabbed life with both hands and open arms, in his own words: “Life is not to die young and have a good looking corpse it’s to slide into the grave totally worn out used up and saying it’s been a hell of a life.”
Robert was a two-time cancer survivor, of lung and a pancreatic cancer. By sheer luck during one of his exams post lung cancer, he was diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. That discovery, in combination with some innovative surgery, gave us 6 more years with Robert. This meant he and Mary could make one more trip to New Zealand to attend his oldest daughter's wedding. He had one helluva lot of determination.
Robert was a follower of Thich Nhat Hanh and his way of living, a lover of his Airedale dogs, a motorcyclist and scuba diver. Robert was an active member of The Bruce Trail Organisation, Probus and his local photography group.
Finally Robert said: "Don’t look for me I’m not here."
From your family, we miss you and you will be always in our hearts.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.
A tree will be planted in memory of Robert in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. The annual dedication service will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.dodsandmcnair.com
