Obituary for Mern Coveny

Coveny, Marian (Mern) Louise – September 24, 1954 – January 6, 2022
After a courageous battle with cancer, Marian passed away at 67 on January 6, 2022 at home surrounded by love with her wife, Deb Adkins and her best friends, Janet Stone and Carol Simpson at her side. She was born and raised in Wallaceburg (Electric), Ontario. She attended McMaster University where she earned a Bachelor of Physical Education degree in 1978, and then moved to Burlington where she enjoyed a life-long career as a physical education/geography teacher with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board at St. Ignatius Loyola high school in Mississauga. Marian’s passion and love for teaching left a great impression on many students that she mentored and coached throughout her career, many of whom she had lasting friendships with. Mern was an avid and accomplished athlete, competing in softball, hockey, and ball hockey at the highest level. She was inducted into the Wallaceburg Sports Hall of Fame (1995) and the McMaster Sports Hall of Fame (2002). However, Mern’s proudest achievement was representing Canada at the first Womens World Hockey Tournament where she captained the team to a gold medal in 1987. She was both a driven and fierce competitor in sports and a deeply compassionate and giving soul in life. Mern’s life was full of travel adventures around the world; playing many sports: golf, curling, tennis, hockey, softball; sharing lots of fun times with family and friends at her cottage in Haliburton; and finally lending a helping hand to anyone that needed it. Marian also had a deep faith in God that permeated everything she did. She is an inspiration to all who knew her and made us all better humans. Marian will be deeply missed by her wife and best friend of 28 years, Deb Adkins, sisters and brothers, Patricia Foster (Tom)(pre-deceased), Jacqueline Guertin (Ken), Paul Coveny (Joan) (pre-deceased), John Coveny (pre-deceased) (Gert), Mary-Catherine Aarsen (Ron), Margaret Ann Luciuk, Maureen Davis (Bill), Clare Cadotte (Ken), Carmen Myers (Tony), her parents: Ethel and Martel Coveny (pre-deceased); her in-laws Marlene and Clive Adkins, and brother-in-law, Myles Adkins. She was a loving aunt to many, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and leaves behind many friends who loved and adored her.
Thank you to the St. Elizabeth nursing staff, especially Victoria and Cathy and Dr. Candusso who helped make her last days comfortable.

A Celebration of Mern's Life will be held at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre 21 First St. Orangeville on Saturday May 14th, 2022 at 2:30 pm. Friends are welcome to gather beginning at 1:30 pm. Reception will follow the celebration of life.

Gone but never forgotten, forever in our hearts #3.
