Obituary for Lorna Doreen Hogg (Merritt)

Hogg, Lorna Doreen (nee Merritt)

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Lorna Doreen Hogg, nee Merritt, who peacefully departed this world on May 7th, 2023 at the age of 74, surrounded by the love of her family. Beloved wife of Robert Hogg for 47 years, Lorna will be deeply missed by her dear son Ian Hogg and her proud and loving grandson Jake.

Born with an exceptional athletic ability and blessed with good health, Lorna led a fulfilling life. She began her career as a dedicated dental assistant, but soon transitioned to the field of school health, travelling to schools in the region. Despite her busy schedule, Lorna's biggest manual work feat was renovating their first home in Niagara On the Lake, where she spent an entire summer scraping down to bare wood and painting the beautiful NOTL style wood clapboard. With a water hose hanging on the ladder and a propane torch and scraper in her hand, she was a force to be reckoned with.

Lorna was also a devoted member of the Maycourt Club of St. Catharines, a ladies' club that contributed hundreds of dollars back into the community. She even travelled around Ontario meeting with other clubs to ensure they too were making a positive impact.

Her strong work ethic and dedication shone through when she joined her husband in starting a home global process controls manufacturing business. Using her controlled growth plan, Lorna taught herself the ins and outs of global logistics, brokerage, and complicated bookkeeping, handling worldwide orders and taxes with ease. On the manufacturing side, she was responsible for packaging and even the precise task of potting (sealing a tube to air) every item made, which required great skill and attention to detail. Her strength was truly awe-inspiring, but it was not without its sacrifices, as she once even caught her hand in a powerful drill press while helping her husband re-spool wire.

Lorna and Robert enjoyed a beautiful life together in Muskoka, where Lorna designed the cottage they had, which was then professionally blueprint-ed. She relished the winter months when all the weekenders had gone, and the area was quiet. Lorna was a woman of strong convictions, and those who did her wrong had no place in her life.

To honor Lorna's memory, a tree will be planted in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Conservation Area in Orangeville, and the 21st Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. We extend our deepest condolences to her sister Barbara and her brother Paul, other relatives, and her many friends. May Lorna rest in eternal peace.

At Lorna's request, cremation has taken place. Memorial donations to The Lung Association would be appreciated by the family.
