Obituary for Leonard Murray Eades

Leonard Murray Eades BA, LLB, JD: notice of passing

I was born at home in west Toronto Ontario on August 5, 1931. I was there, but I do not remember it; although my mother was always a reliable repository for all such information within our extended family.

I was born into a warm and supportive family consisting of my paternal grandfather George William Eades, a retired CPR engineer, my parents George Edward, a WWI veteran on full pension as a result of injuries sustained in action in WWI, & Violet Christine (Buckley), 3 brothers Everett, Warren & Victor, and 2 sisters Margaret & Eleanore. All of the foregoing predeceased me as did 4 other older siblings who each died within 2 years of being born.

I was educated in Toronto at Keele Street public school, Humberside Collegiate Institute, (doing grade XIII at Port Credit High School), Victoria College at U of T, Osgoode hall now the faculty of law at York U, and the faculty of law at U of T. I was an active member of the legal profession for more than 60 years, mostly as a sole practitioner in downtown Toronto and Mississauga. My practice was mostly Business related with many clients in the truck transport business. I was general counsel to United Van Lines (Canada) Ltd for 53 years. Towards the end of my career I was very honoured when the Peel Law Association presented me with its Lifetime Achievement Award for 2019.

I met Glorya Gillies in the first semester at Vic, and we married in 1956 at Christmas break in my last year at U of T law. We vowed to be together until death did us part. That took place in 2011 a remarkable 55 years together, thanks to her patience or endurance. During that time we brought into being our family comprised of our children Campbell, David and Christine, all of whom brought us great joy, love, and pride in many ways. We were also involved in raising Cam’s three sons Brad, Jeff, and Curtis with whom we were very close, and of whom we were also very proud. There are 3 great grandchildren now (at the time of writing) who are looking like they will carry on the family characteristics..I am also very proud of them. We also acquired 4 step grand children with whom we had good, but not so close, relationships. No mention of the Eades family is complete without reference to the four legged members of the family there were usually two or more each of dogs and cats, with very little interaction among them.

Our family was a skiing, sailing, and summer Island bunch. At the end of summer on sailing cruises with my 3 grandsons we always had 4 high end mountain bikes stowed below deck while under way. Once we were tied up the bikes would come out: it was on these voyages that my grandsons taught me how to ride a mountain bike down a set of stairs; a level of balance and concentration that helped when riding single track in southern Ontario, mountain creek beds in B.C., and single track in deserts in California and Arizona.

During the time that I was practicing I served on a number of boards of directors of public and private corporations, municipal ratepayer groups, professional legal groups, and community organizations. The most significant of these was 16 years as a director of the Mississauga Hospital, of which I was chairman for two years, the maximum term allowed under the Hospital’s bylaws.

Initially after retiring I found 7day weekends a major adjustment, however, I coped.

The foregoing is my life so far (early 2022), as I perceived it while living it; it has been a great ride. The final elements may be added by someone in the family, some of whom I am sure will be nearby when I pass.
