Obituary for George Donald Barton

George Donald Barton

After a long and well-lived life, George Barton passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021.

Loving husband for 64 years to Shirley Barton (nee Gooch) (2017). Devoted father to Lorie (Bryan), Beverley, Pat (Larry) and grandfather of Adrienne, Valerie, Kimberley, Joanna, Alex, Devan and Sean. Also great-grandfather of Cailley, Cole, Isaac, Hannah, Connor and Ellie.

George was born 91 years ago in Toronto where he worked until his retirement at The Toronto Carpet Manufacturing Company Limited. After retirement he and Shirley moved from their Willowdale home to Newmarket, then finally settling in Shelburne. George was actively involved in every community where he and Shirley lived and was a proud volunteer at The Shelburne Public Library into his 90's.

Throughout his life George was an avid and informed collector: of stamps, coins and cameras, but most notably, books. The size of his personal library was impressive but most remarkable was his ability to share both a synopsis and an opinion of each volume in his collection. He could also tell you how much he'd paid for them. He has certainly passed on his passion for reading and learning to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The importance of his relationships with family and friends was valued and a high priority for George. His thoughtfulness and acts of kindness will long be remembered and missed.

May our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend rest in peace with his beloved Shirley.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Mauro and the staff at Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville and Dr. Catania of the North Dufferin Wellness Centre.

Per George's wishes there will be no funeral. Arrangements entrusted to Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, Orangeville. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.dodsandmcnair.com.

Those wishing to make a donation in memory of George are asked to consider The Shelburne Public Library.
