Passed peacefully at home on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the age of 98. Beloved partner to Harold Popoff. Dear Mother to Maureen Friedrichsen-Reed, Jack (Esther) Dockman, Christine Dockman, and Michael (Laurie) Dockman. Cherished Grandmother of fifteen and Great-Grandmother of thirteen. Family being most important to her, she never missed an opportunity to share the joy and love in her heart with each and every family member. She will be missed! Eileen was sister-in-law to Loveday Newby (and the late Tom Newby); and the late Hedley and Vera Dockman. She was much beloved by them and their families.The eldest of seven children, she is survived by her siblings in the UK, Colin (Leona) Fursey, Dennis (Joy) Fursey and Jean Whalley and was predeceased by Roland (Margaret, and the late Lillian), Peter (Jeannie) Fursey and Joyce (and the late Ken) Diamond. She is remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins.Throughout her life, Eileen enjoyed the blessing of many deep and devoted friendships, some of which dated back more than sixty years, and all of which were highly valued.
Throughout her career & after retirement, Eileen was a pioneer & facilitator in the development of many new social, health, and emergency services & programs primarily within the Region of Peel, with particular focus on North Peel after the region divided. Of particular note - the Homemakers program and Hospice. She was the recipient of several awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal; the Canadian Red Cross Society Distinguished Service Award; the 1986 Woman of the Year Award by the Brampton Business and Professional Women's Club. She also received Citations from the Premier of Ontario & the Brampton Member of Parliament; Recognition Plaques for Service from the Town of Caledon, Chingacousy Health Board. the Peel District Health Council & the William Osler Health Centre. She was the founding Executive-Director of the Brampton/North Peel Red Cross Society and in that capacity headed the Disaster Relief in the Mississauga Rail Disaster & the Barrie Tornado. Eventually, she became relief fundraising organizer for many disasters on behalf of the International Red Cross. She had served as President of the Snelgrove Women's Institute, taught square, round, and ballroom dancing; and was also a long-time member of the Brampton Cardinals Choir. One particular well-deserved source of pride was earning her Honours BA in Social Psychology in her fifties, while still working full-time. Eileen and her family are especially grateful for the wonderful care she received from her various specialists and care-givers, including but not limited to Dr. Josa, and Eva Tullett. Cremation has taken place.
A Celebration of Eileen's life will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at Fursey Harbour, Caledon, Ontario. Donations in her name may be made and will be gratefully accepted by the Canadian Red Cross.
A tree will be planted in memory of Eileen in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. The annual dedication service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.dodsandmcnair.com
