The first time I ever met Joan was at Union Station after having travelled across Canada from Vancouver in January 1969. This was the start of a friendship lasting a year short of 50 years! Joan, Ed and Angela have not just been lifelong friends, but part of my family. They were at my first wedding in Montreal, there for the important events of both my boys lives and became firm friends of my parents. Joan was my shoulder to cry on, or there for sharing in my joys, but most importantly part of every major event in my life, both here in Canada and in England. Aunty Joan and Uncle Ed were greatly loved by both my boys and when I relocated to live in England, were there for many of our family get-togethers. The things that I will always remember with so much affection were the many laughs that were such a big part of our lives whenever we met up. Disasters came thick and fast, house moves followed in quick succession, Joan was the driving force in the family, always looking for a new adventure for the three of them to partake in. How I have laughed with them over the years! One day I went to their house and noticed that a newly wallpapered room had one wall where the wallpaper had been glued on sideways. This was very evident because three walls had the design going from top to bottom, but on the 4th wall, the design was going from left to right. This was because they had not bought enough paper, and was the only way they could finish decorating the room! Joan was surprised I had noticed! Another time, a cupboard was hung upside down and too low over the washing machine which meant that the shelves kept falling out and the washing machine lid could only be opened a few inches with the washing having to be squeezed in and out with great difficulty. Joans heart was immense, she always seemed to collect all the waifs and strays needing a helping hand and was always there to offer help and support. Although Joan is no longer here physically, she will remain in our hearts and soul forever. Thank you Joan for being such an amazing friend and your hello love in your Liverpudlian accent which you never lost will be greatly missed. All my love and thank you, dear friend. Yvonne.

I remember visiting you when you lived near Lark Lane in Liverpool and being very impressed and envious that you lived in a flat (apartment it would be called these days) whereas I had to live in a house! We were friends from age 6 to 11 there, before you all emigrated. Your Mum always made me very welcome and fed me tomato soup for lunch, as she reminded me many times over the years I stayed with you in Canada. To this day, Heinz Tomato Soup remains my favourite.
When I made my first trip over to visit you in Canada in 1968, your Mum and Dad were delighted to see me as I was to see them. On my many trips over, they were like my surrogate parents, looking after me. Your Mum, you and I had a great road trip to Washington and Atlantic City in 1968. Your Mum was most concerned that I overdid the sunbathing on the beach, gently warning me to be more careful. She was a caring person and I treasure those memories and so glad I visited in 2017 and was able to give her a last big hug.

I had the pleasure of getting to know this wonderful lady at Coles Bookstore in the mall where I work part time. I always loved chatting with her about books and life. She will be missed.
